Do you know what these firefighters are doing?  Continue reading for the answer.When I first joined the department we had a system that was a bit different.  It had a pickup tube that would be placed in the containers.

By the way, did you notice the containers are all metal?  This was 1929, prior to plastics.

For those of you who haven’t figured it out yet, they’re adding firefighting foam into the funnel.  It mixes with the water in the hose line and  creates a blanket of foamy bubbles.  The foam is used to supress fires fuled by flamable liquids.

These days new rigs come equipped with a tank to hold the foam and the engine operator is the only person needed to maintain foam operations.
